Christina Hoff Sommers and Peter LinzerNov. 9, 2011 – During the presentation “Who Stole Feminism? How Women Have Betrayed Women” at the University of Houston Law Center, American author and former philosophy professor, Christina Hoff Sommers argued that contemporary feminism is flawed by its “irrational hostility to men, its recklessness with facts and statistics, and its inability to take seriously the possibility that the sexes are equal, but different.” The Federalist Society sponsored the event held yesterday. It included remarks from Sommers and University of Houston Law Center Professor Peter Linzer.

“Modern feminism has been reduced to male bashing,” Sommers said. “The battle is over. American women are freer now than anywhere else in the world. Most of the hard work of feminism needs to be done in other places around the world.”

Christina Hoff Sommers PresentationThe author of Who Stole Feminism?: How Women Have Betrayed Women and The War Against Boys: How Misguided Feminism Is Harming Our Young Men, Sommers described herself as an "equity feminist." Equity feminism is based upon individual justice for equal legal and civil rights and many of the original goals of the early feminists, according to Sommers.

While Sommers said women are no longer an oppressed group, Linzer argued that while there are fewer barriers, the battle for equality is not over.

“While women are doing better than men in education and affirmative action, arguing the war is over is absolute nonsense,” Linzer said. “Professor Sommers is looking at the upper middle class. What about the waitress who is a single mother working for next to nothing? The glass ceiling is real.”
