Oct. 28, 2011 – The University of Houston Law Center Student Bar Association and the Career Development Office joined forces last week kicking off the year’s career-focused activities with two lunches: “Networking” and “What I did my 1L summer?”
During the “Networking” lunch, co-hosted by the Houston Young Lawyers Association as part of Career Week, a panel of four attorneys and four students covered topics including networking Do’s and Don’ts, networking opportunities, and what potential employers are looking for in networking situations. More than 70 students attended the event. Panelists included Michael Alexander of W.J. Alexander & Associates P.C., Christine Herron of The Kilburn Law Firm, PLLC, Jason Ryan of CenterPoint Energy, David Walton of Beirne, Maynard & Parsons, L.L.P., and UH Law Center students Garrett Gibson, Ross Hablinski, Poston Pritchett, and Ysa Rodriguez.
At the second event, “What I did my 1L summer,” a panel of eight students discussed what they did and how they went about securing their employment. Students, especially 1Ls, had the opportunity to ask questions about the upcoming months as they plan for their first summer. Panelists included Jeff Adams, Katie Barnhill, Lindsey Blankenau, Nick Floyd, Angeles Garcia, Jim Silliman, Courtney Walsh, and Catherine Zarate. More than 90 students attended the event.
