Oct. 27, 2011 - At the invitation of Texas Sen. Rodney Ellis, the University of Houston Law Center’s Criminal Justice Institute will host a reception in the state Capitol today for Prof. Sandra Guerra Thompson and two of her former students who edited a compilation of student essays on wrongful convictions. The event will be held in conjunction with a national symposium on indigent defense being held by the Texas Indigent Defense Commission. Written for judges, lawyers and scholars alike, American Justice in the Age of Innocence is a collection of essays which examines the most common causes of wrongful convictions. It was written by UH Law Center students as a project of Thompson’s criminal law seminar. Thompson and two of the student authors of the book, Jennifer Hopgood and Hillary Valderrama, now practicing attorneys, will be on hand to sign books.
