Adjunct Guzman Named Latina Judge of the Year
The world is taking note of wise Latinas. First Sonia Sotomayor became the first Hispanic on the U.S. Supreme Court. Then the other shoe dropped, with Law Center Adjunct Professor Eva Guzman, justice of the 14th Court of Appeals, named Latina Judge of the Year by the Hispanic National Bar Association. “I’m very honored to be recognized by this prestigious organization for my work on the bench and in the community at large,” says Guzman, who is teaching civil trial advocacy this fall, her 10th year at the Law Center. Her Honor was appointed to fill a vacancy on the appellate bench by Gov. Rick Perry in 2001. She was subsequently elected to fill the unexpired term, then reelected to a full six-year term in 2004. She previously served as judge of the 309th Family District Court and had a private practice in civil and family law litigation. She earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration at the University of Houston and her J.D. at South Texas College of Law.
