Frequently Asked Legal Research Questions

Some questions are "frequently asked" at the Law Library's Reference Desk. This guide directs patrons to library resources that will answer those questions. The Law Library has a variety of resources that can help patrons conduct legal research.

The Reference Desk isn't staffed during the all of the Library's open hours. The purpose of this guide is to provide patrons with some reference guidance when a Reference Librarian isn't available. If your question isn't listed in this guide, or if you want more information, please consult with a Reference Librarian. The current Reference Desk Hours are posted on the Library's Web site.

This guide doesn't provide legal advice. If you are seeking legal advice, you can contact the Houston Bar Association's Lawyer Referral Service at (713) 237-9429.

Notes on Using this Guide

  • The resources are listed in alphabetical orders. If you have trouble finding helpful information, try reviewing several of the resources to determine which one(s) best meets your needs. Several of the resources are designated as "Self Help Books". These are books written for people trying to "help themselves", so they are written in very basic terms. If you needmore detailed information, try using one of the other listed resources.
  • This guide isn't comprehensive. The Library may have other resources that provideanswers to the listed questions. This guide attempts to list resources that are easy to use and understand.
