Bruce Ackerman. We the people. Volume 3: The civil rights revolution. Belknap Press, 2014.

KF4541.A8 2014

The first two volumes of Bruce Ackerman’s We the People combined his constitutional theory of “dualist democracy” with histories of the nation’s founding, Reconstruction, and the New Deal. In this, the third and final volume, Ackerman focuses on the political struggles and upheavals that led to the landmark civil rights legislation of the 1960s. In addition to telling the stories of the great leaders of the period, he also shows how the involvement of ordinary people in politics can produce radical change.

Chris Brummer. Minilateralism: how trade alliances, soft law, and financial engineering are redefining economic statecraft. Cambridge University Press, 2014.

K3823.B78 2014

The era of multilateralism in economic affairs—exemplified by institutions like the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund—may be giving way to what author Chris Brummer refers to as “minilateralism,” defined by a focus on trade alliances, “soft law” agreements, and financial engineering. Brummer shows how nations use these economic tools to their advantage, and examines the broader implications for the global economy as a whole.
