Deborah L. Rhode. Lawyers as Leaders. Oxford University Press, 2013.

KF298.R46 2013

In this book, described by its publisher as the “first serious work on leadership and law,” Rhode draws on empirical studies and interdisciplinary research to examine why so many leadership positions—from business to philanthropy to government—are filled by lawyers. She also looks at the various attributes lawyers bring to these roles, and notes that the legal profession often undervalues the interpersonal skills necessary for effective leadership.

Elana Shever. Resources for reform: oil and neoliberalism in Argentina. Stanford University Press, 2012.

HD9574.A72S47 2012

This book, Shever’s first, is the result of research she conducted in Argentina between 2002 and 2006, when that country’s state-owned oil company was being transformed into a private, transnational corporation. Drawing on her training as a cultural anthropologist, and covering everything from global economics to the family lives of oil workers, Shever explores the complex interaction between free-market reforms and social change.
