Walter T. Champion, Jr., and I. Nelson Rose. Gaming law in a nutshell. West, 2012.

KF9440.C43 2012

Co-authored by Professor Walter Champion, Gaming Law in a Nutshell discusses all aspects of gambling law, and on all levels: local, tribal, state, national, and international. It covers all forms of wagering, legal and illegal, including casino games and slot machines, lotteries, poker, bingo, sports betting, racing, and Internet gaming. This book explains why legal gambling, one of the fastest growing industries in the world, still faces restrictions on its right to advertise or even have its contracts enforced. It has separate discussions of many jurisdictions, including Nevada, New Jersey, Macau, Canada, and other countries; Indian and charity gaming; taxes; intellectual property; compulsive gambling; and the most popular forms of gambling.

Kimberly K. Smith. Governing animals: animal welfare and the liberal state. Oxford University Press, 2012.

KF9440.C43 2012

Much has been written in recent years on our moral duties towards animals, but the important question of how far the state may go to enforce those duties has remained unanswered. Kimberly K. Smith fills that gap by exploring how liberal political principles apply to animal welfare policy. Focusing on animal welfare in the United States, Governing Animals begins with an account of the historical relationship between animals and the development of the American liberal welfare state. It then turns to the central theoretical argument: some animals (most prominently pets and livestock) may be considered members of the liberal social contract. According to Smith, this conclusion justifies limited state intervention to defend their welfare - even when such intervention may harm human citizens.
