Jody
Lyneé Madeira. Killing McVeigh: the death penalty and the myth of closure.
New York University Press, 2012. KF224.M37M33
2012 On
April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh detonated a bomb that felled the Alfred P.
Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people. In 2001, an
unprecedented 242 witnesses watched him die by lethal injection. In Killing
McVeigh, Jody Lyneé Madeira uses the Oklahoma City bombing as a case study to
explore how family members and other survivors come to terms with mass
murder. As the fullest case study to date of the Oklahoma City Bombing
survivors’ struggle for justice and the first-ever case study of closure,
this book describes the profound human and institutional impacts of these
labors to demonstrate the importance of understanding what closure really is
before naively asserting it can or has been reached. |

Jeremy
Waldron. The harm in hate speech. Harvard University Press, 2012. KF9345.W34
2012 For
many, regulation of hate speech violates the First Amendment and damages a
free society. Waldron rejects this view, and makes the case that hate speech
should be regulated as part of a commitment to human dignity and to inclusion
and respect for members of vulnerable minorities. Free-speech advocates speak
of despising what racists say but defending to the death their right to say
it. Waldron finds this emphasis on intellectual resilience misguided and
points instead to the threat hate speech poses to the lives, dignity, and
reputations of minority members. Finding support for his view among
philosophers of the Enlightenment, Waldron examines the serious consequences
of hateful speech. |
