book presents a theory of international justice that combines the liberal
idea that the lives of individuals are what ultimately matter with the notion
that states have a basic right to organize and run their affairs as they see
fit. Often taking positions that run against the grain of current
academic opinion, the authors apply this theory to controversial topics in
the area of international justice including human rights, democracy,
succession, international criminal tribunals, armed intervention, political
assassination, global economic inequality, and immigration. |

book explores the legal recognition of opposite-sex cohabitating couples in
the United States. It provides a review of the history of legal
cohabitation in the U.S., the inadequacy of the legal remedies available to
cohabitants in most states, the social science literature about cohabitation,
and the experience of six other countries that have attempted legal reforms
to address the problems of cohabitants. The author argues that many
benefits attendant upon formal marriage should be extended to cohabitants who
have lived together for two years or have a child, unless the couple opts out
of them by contract. |
