Carlos R. Soltero
Latinos and American Law: Landmark Supreme Court Cases
University of Texas Press, 2006

KF4757.5.L38A52 2006

This book provides an overview of decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court that have both expanded and restricted rights of Latinos. Soltero provides an overview of fourteen important decisions beginning with the Fuller Court (1888-1910) and continuing through the Taft Court (1921-1930), the Warren Court (1953-1969), the Burger Court (1969-1986) and ending with the Rehnquist Court (1986-2005). For each case, Soltero includes a complete discussion of the opinion along with analysis of its significance and impact. He also includes history and legal background for the issues presented in each case which include criminal justice, voting rights, education, employment, immigration, and education.

Rosemary Stevens, Charles E. Rosenberg, and Lawton R. Burns.
History and Health Policy in the United States: Putting the Past Back in
Rutgers University Press, 2006

RA 395.A3H57 2006

In this book, scholars from a range of different fields such as history of medicine, law, bioethics and sociology combine their efforts to demonstrate the importance of history with respect to health policy. They uncover the assumptions that society makes about the role of government in healthcare, technology, and medicine and discuss issues such as the consumer economy and concerns for those who lack health insurance. This book demonstrates how looking at history can help those who create and implement health policies avoid making the same mistakes or using approaches that have failed in the past. History and Health Policy in the United States illustrates that a good historical perspective can provide a solid foundation to implement more effective health policies in the future.
