O'Quinn
Law Library
Current Awareness Tools
There
are a variety of current awareness tools available to UH faculty, and though
many may be aware of WestCLIP and Lexis Eclipse searches, few are familiar with
the myriad of options available to them through other providers. Below are just
a few such services.
1. Smart CILP (Current Index to Legal Periodicals)
SmartCILP is a customizable email service that provides users with weekly
law review article updates in their areas of interest. Each user can create
a profile designating which journals or topics to track. SmartCILP will then
email the user the citations that fall within these areas of interest
To create a new profile,
a. Please fill out the form at http://depts.washington.edu/scilp/scilp3.cgi
b.
In the Affiliation box, type University of Houston O'Quinn Law Library
c. In the authorization code box, type 5737
Please note that while you may update your profile at any time, any changes
you make will overwrite your
previous settings. Therefore, if you wish to add an additional subject to
an existing profile, you will need to check off all of your existing subjects
as well as the one you would like to add.
2. Table of Contents Service by the University of Texas, Tarlton
Law Library
This service indexes tables of contents from more
than 750 law reviews and other scholarly publications
related to the law published in the United States
and abroad. If you would like to receive these listings
by email, please let your librarian liaison know.
If you would prefer to search the listings instead,
go to to http://tarlton.law.utexas.edu/tallons/content_search.html
3. Ingenta
Ingenta is a database that summarizes articles from over 25,000 publications
worldwide and provides the full-text of over 5,000 publications. The subject
areas covered by these journals range from medicine to social sciences to
economics. The American Economist, the Journal of the American
Taxation Association, and the New England Journal of Medicine are just a few of the titles available. If you have interests in cross-disciplinary
areas, this database can be used to create a profile tailored to your research
needs.
To create a profile :
1. Go to http://www.ingenta.com
2. From the left hand column, select Sign up now.
3. Select personal registration
4. Fill in the registration form (only the items with * are mandatory)
5. On the next page, you select My Research Alerts (for a
specific search) or My Table of Contents (TOC of selected journals delivered
by email).
6. Specify your search terms, subjects or journals.
Results will be delivered weekly to you via email.
Ingenta is only one of dozens of databases available to UH faculty
through Anderson Library. To browse a few others, please see http://info.lib.uh.edu/research/elist.html
