The IPIL Sponsored Scholarship Grants (SSG) Program at the University of Houston Law Center is designed to facilitate newly-authored scholarship on Intellectual Property & Information Law (IPIL) by Federal Appellate Court clerks.
As one of the nation’s leading programs for the study of intellectual property and information law, the IPIL Institute at the University of Houston Law Center is pleased to provide this initiative to support the creation and dissemination of quality scholarship in its field.
The IPIL SSG program provides grants for IPIL‑related scholarship from scholars serving or soon serving the Federal Appellate Courts as judicial clerks under a two-year or less appointment. The program is made possible through the remarkably generous support of the Institute’s contributors and supporters, most of whom are practitioners and organizations in Houston, a city with one of the most sophisticated intellectual property bars in the world.
Grant amounts may change from year to year, but are typically in the four‑figure range, paid upon submitting the final copy, with one grant selection anticipated approximately each year. Grants will not be awarded to recipients receiving awards in the five years prior to the current grant application deadline. All articles must be of publishable quality, relate to IPIL subject matter, and total at least 20,000 words, inclusive of footnotes.
Typically, there will also be an opportunity to present the article at an IPIL event or program, either at the Law Center in Houston, or at some other location or venue, with the trip funded by the IPIL Institute.
To apply for a grant, please submit the following:
All items should be provided electronically, as attachments in Adobe Acrobat PDF format, in a single submittal emailed to: ssgpclerkipil@uh.edu
Application materials will be treated in confidence. Co-authored article proposals, where both authors are clerks as described above, will be considered, however, travel funding to present the article will be limited to one co-author and only one grant award will be made.
