2009 Houston Higher Education Law Roundtable, May 20-23, 2009

Sponsored by the University of Houston Law Center's Law for Higher Education Law and Governance (IHELG), the Houston Higher Education Law Roundtable is an intensive seminar for junior faculty, who write or teach in the broad fields of college law and related areas. Held at the University of Houston Law Center every other year, the Law Roundtable alternates with the IHELG Houston Higher Education Finance Roundtable, which was established in 1998, with its inaugural seminar held in May, 1999. This activity is designed to improve the skills of faculty conducting research in these fields; special accommodations may also be made for a very small number of scholars with terminal degrees who work for educational research organizations or associations. No doctoral students without completed dissertations will be considered, or law students whose JD degree has not been awarded.

During the Roundtable, a small number of fellows (6-7) will be chosen to present papers, works-in-progress, or detailed outlines to the group, who will be joined by three senior faculty, with special expertise in the field of higher education law. Fellows' work in higher education law topics will be presented and critiqued, and there will be additional activities, including a discussion of research resources (funding opportunities, research agenda-building, mentorship). The group will also attend either a Houston Comets WNBA game at the Toyota Fieldhouse or a Houston Astros game in Minute Maid Park, schedule permitting. The Roundtable is scheduled for late afternoon, May 20 (Wednesday) through late morning on Saturday, May 23, 2009. All local expenses are paid by IHELG, and fellows' expenses will include only airfare and ground transportation. A listserv will be established for each cohort, to maintain communications. Partial support is also provided by the Ford Foundation, through a grant to the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), Institute on Equity Research Methods and Critical Policy Analysis: http://www.ashe.ws/?page=252 .

There is no application form: a brief letter stating appropriate research interests and a c. v. should be sent to Prof. Michael A. Olivas, at the IHELG offices. (We will accept applications by U.S. mail, overnight mail, fax, or email.) Please share this with anyone who may have a research interest in higher education law issues. The deadline date is February 1, 2008.
