EENR Calendar of Environmental Events in Houston

This list records past events in the Houston area for environmental lawyers, students, consultants and practitioners. It includes several conferences and workshops that are not sponsored by the University of Houston Law Center or the EENR Center. While we include them for your information, neither the Law Center nor the EENR Center endorse or authorize any outside speakers or events.

Past Events

The State Bar of Texas, Environmental and Natural Resources Law Section sponsors 6 paid internships with 6 state agencies:  The TCEQ; Office of the Attorney General (for environmental protection); the Railroad Commission; Texas Parks and Wildlife; the Texas General Land Office, and the Harris County District Attorney's Office (Environmental Crimes Division).  The deadline for receipt of the application materials is October 30, 2013.  The application is attached.  Students must submit all three of the following: 1. Application form with affidavit certifying enrollment at UHLC this year; 2. unofficial copy of most recent transcript; and 3. updated resume.  Visit www.texenrls.org/internship.cfm for the forms and see the attached.  To repeat:  Students must email or fax or upload to Simplicity their complete application packet of all 3 items, all at the same time or you will not have applied properly.

2014 ENRLS Internship Application

The Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation provides funds to member law schools to subsidize student travel to its conferences. The attached form provides detailed information about how to apply for travel funds. The program is funded through the Law Center's Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Center. The EENR Center will provide a maximum of $700 per student to attend the Renewable Energy conference described below. Two students will be funded. If additional students apply, the EENR Center will consider additional funding from its own budget, in an amount to be decided later. The deadline for submitting your application to receive funding for this conference, following the attached instructions, is October 8, 2013. more...

 

Sept 26, 2013 - The Institute for Energy Law (IEL) will be presenting the 3rd Oilfield Services Law Conference at the JW Marriott Hotel in Houston on Monday, October 7th, and the UHLC is  entitled to send two students to the conference free of tuition charges.  If you would like to attend this conference, please send April Moreno at afmoreno@Central.UH.edu an email by September 26, with the following information: 1.  a statement of why you want to attend; how this conference will help you in your career goals; 2.  your vita or resume  3. a list of courses you have taken to date in the Energy/Environment area.

The two students will be selected  on September 27, and Professor Weaver, as law center trustee to IEL, will send your names to IEL.  You cannot register yourself.  If more than 2 students apply, the seats will go to those who applied first, all other things being equal.  Other forthcoming IEL conferences which two students can attend include:

Sept 25, 2013 - On Sept. 25 at 6:30 pm at Asia Society Texas, the U.S. Department of Energy's Japan Office Director / Energy Attaché stationed in Tokyo will be in Houston to present a talk titled, “The US-Japan Relationship in Energy Policy and Security.” This event is open to the public. The Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Center at the UHLC will reimburse students for the cost of the ticket to attend. This is a good opportunity to see how the U.S. Department of State is involved in energy issues abroad and also to network with the Asian community in Houston. The Asia Society's Building, in the Museum District, is an architectural gem also. For reimbursement, bring your registration and proof of payment to April Moreno, in the Health Law Suite, and she will arrange the reimbursement.

June 17, 2013 - The U.S. Interior Department's Bureau of Ocean Energy and the Commerce Department's National Fisheries Service will hold a joint public meeting in Galveston on June 17 to hear comments on an environmental impact study of the effects of seismic surveys on whales, fish and other marine life in the Gulf of Mexico. more...

November 5, 2012 - Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spoke on environmental issues at the Progressive Forum. He was joined by former Houston mayor Bill White.  Kennedy was named one of Time magazine’s “Heroes for the Planet” for his success in helping Riverkeeper, New York’s clean water advocate, lead the fight to restore the Hudson River. The group’s success helped spawn more than 160 Waterkeeper organizations around the world (including the Galveston Bay Riverkeeper).   more...

Sept. 21, 2012 -- Teresa Sabol Spezio, the UH Energy Management and Policy visiting scholar/postdoc for this academic year, gave a presentation to the energy/environment group in the history department. She had a twenty-five year career as an environmental/energy engineer before going back to school to earn a Ph.D. in environmental history. She currently is rewriting for publication her dissertation on the Santa Barbara oil spill.
