One of the Clinic’s main objectives is to provide first-rate pro-bono legal representation to indigent clients and
communities in Harris County in the areas of law covered by the particular clinic. Here are examples of some of
the CLE trainings and outreaches where clinic students and faculty made a difference in the community.

PRO BONO LEGAL TRAINING FOCUSES ON VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND OTHER VUL-
NERABLE POPULATIONS

According to AVDA, there were 38,490 incidents of domestic violence reported in Harris County in 2012. The
University of Houston Law Center Clinical Program partnered with Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA) to
host a CLE training on November 14, 2014 to prepare participants to represent domestic violence victims in
family law, immigration cases, and included information for representing clients where service by publication is
required.

Upon completion of this training, participants were encouraged to volunteer to provide pro bono representation
as attorney ad litems for missing parents.

Janet Heppard, director of the UH Law Center Clinical Program and Barbara Stalder, Clinical Supervising
Attorney of the UH Civil Practice Clinic, discussed best practices when representing domestic violence survivors.

The event also included a panel moderated by Anne Chandler, Director of Tahirih Justice Center’s Houston
office and included UHLC Professors Janet Heppard and Geoffrey Hoffman, Director of the UH Immigration
Clinic, Maurice Hew, Texas Southern University Director of Clinical Education, and Jill Campbell, attorney at
Neighborhood Centers, Inc., who spoke about types of relief available to immigrant victims of domestic
violence.
