Online Application for Health Law Externship

Please fill out the brief information below and your information will automatically be e-mailed to our offices.  If your application is approved, the faculty instructor will contact the Office of Student Services to enroll you in the appropriate courses, and you will be copied on the email.  If you are not approved, you will be informed via email.

In addition to the field credits indicated above, all JD students receiving credit for their first externship/health law externship will be concurrently enrolled in the 1 credit graded Public Interest Workplace course.    NOTE that PIW MUST be taken during the SAME SEMESTER as the one during which you are working/externing – NO EXCEPTIONS.

Additionally, you cannot sign up for any other course that conflicts in any way with the time/date scheduled for PIW.

How many hours towards your J.D. will you have completed prior to enrollment in the externship?

Do you understand that you must have the the approval of faculty supervisor Erma Bonadero, and the placement supervisor before beginning your placement?
 
Do you understand you cannot receive both payment (including fellowships) and academic credit for your externship or internship? 
 
Do you understand you must complete a minimum number of 180 hours (3 credit hours) or 240 hours (4 credit hours) at the placement to receive credit?
 
Do you understand that the health law externship is currently graded credit/no credit, the one-credit course is graded and that failure/no credit in either class will result in failure/no credit in both classes?  
 
Do you understand that if you are seeking academic credit for a health law externship, you must also enroll in the accompanying one-credit, graded course (Public Interest Workplace) during the SAME SEMESTER as you are working/externing?
 
Do you understand that the PIW course is graded on a mandatory curve in accordance with UHLC policies, and that this is not subject to negotiation with the faculty instructor?

Why are you interested in a health law externship?
 
CRITICALLY IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL FIRST-TIME SUMMER EXTERNS:  Each year there is a MANDATORY orientation for all first-time externs/health law externs.  This orientation is held during the week following spring graduation.  If you wish to receive credit for your summer externship, you MUST attend the ENTIRE orientation – NO EXCEPTIONS.  FAILURE TO ATTEND THE ORIENTATION IN FULL, IN PERSON, WILL RESULT IN YOUR BEING DROPPED FROM THE CLASS.  The faculty advisor has no leeway in this regard, so please do not ask to be granted an exception, for it cannot and will not happen.  Thank you for your understanding.

BY SUBMITTING THIS APPLICATION, YOU ARE CERTIFYING THAT THE INFORMATION IS TRUE AND CORRECT.  THE INSTRUCTOR WILL EMAIL YOU WITH QUESTIONS OR WITH APPROVAL/DENIAL OF YOUR APPLICATION.  IF APPROVED, YOUR INFORMATION WILL BE SENT DIRECTLY TO STUDENT SERVICES FOR ENROLLMENT.
