January: Apply to work for judges. Contact the clinics for academic credit details.
February: Attend Public Interest Table Talk and UT Public Interest Career Fair to apply/arrange placements for academic externships or public interest fellowships (see below).
Ongoing: Consult other law students who have worked with various levels of the judiciary or participated in a UHLC clinic.
2. Work in a Law Firm
December 1: For large firms, send resumes to firms indicating they will consider first year students. Find these firms at www.nalpdirectory.com/. We have created a spreadsheet of Texas, New York, and Washington, D.C. firms you can download here. This list is NOT an exhaustive list.
January/February/March: Research attorneys and law firms of interest on www.martindale.com or www.texasbar.com (searchable online member directory). Make contact by sending a resume and cover letter (by email or hard copy) and make a follow up call within the week.
Ongoing: Review Career Development job listings on Symplicity (meet with your counselor to obtain access to Symplicity).
Ongoing: Network at law school sponsored events, community events, or other groups. Conduct informational interviews in areas of interest.
Ongoing: Strategize on a one-on-one basis with a counselor in Career Development to maximize job search efforts.
Ongoing: Watch for announcements from Career Development regarding job fairs.
3. Public Interest (Government and Non-Profit) Positions
January/February: Participate in public interest job fairs. Watch for deadlines.
Ongoing: Search for placement organizations, consult with career counselors about summer internships, and prepare targeted mailings from organizations listed on www.PSLawnet.org.
Apply for Summer Fellowships from UHLC and other posted organizations.
4. Study Abroad
February/March: View the study abroad programs available on the bulletin board and online. Learn about application procedures and deadlines and initiate the financial aid process.
