Career Development OfficeThe First Year Initiative serves to introduce students to the Career Development Office and legal employment searching, describe programs, and highlight important deadlines.

The first step in conducting a job search is to meet with your career counselor. Get to know your counselor as they are the key to an extraordinary amount of career-related information and events.

 

Resume Enhancing Ideas for 1L Summer

1. Judicial Internships/Externships and UHLC Clinics

January/February: Apply to work for judges, generally with your resume, cover letter, copy of transcript and writing sample.

After securing your internship: Contact the clinics for academic credit details (there is a class component for which you will be required to pay tuition).

Ongoing: Consult career counselor and other law students who have worked with various levels of the judiciary or participated in a UHLC clinic.

2.Public Interest (Government and Non-Profit) Positions (as a fellowship or for credit)

January/February/March: Attend Government and Public Interest Table Talk and UT Public Interest Career Fair to apply/arrange placements for academic externships or public interest fellowships.

Ongoing: Search for placement organizations, consult with career counselors about summer internships, and prepare targeted mailings from organizations listed on www.PSLawnet.org.

Apply for Summer Fellowships from UHLC and other posted organizations or appy for Externship Course enrollment if seeking academic credit (there is a class component for which you will be required to pay tuition).

3.Work in a Law Firm

December 1: Consider applying to law firms – those that consider 1Ls generally begin accepting applications December 1st. Find these firms at www.nalpdirectory.com/

January/February/March: Research attorneys and law firms of interest on www.martindale.com or www.texasbar.com (searchable online member directory). Make contact by emailing or mailing a resume and cover letter and make a follow up call within the week.

Ongoing: Review Career Development job listings on Symplicity (meet with your counselor to obtain access to Symplicity) and watch for announcements regarding job fairs.

Ongoing: Network at law school sponsored events, community events, or other groups. Conduct informational interviews in areas of interest.

4. Study Abroad

February/March: View the study abroad programs available on the bulletin board and through the ABA at http://www.abanet.org/legaled/studyabroad/foreign.html
Learn about application procedures and deadlines and initiate the financial aid process.

5. Summer School
