UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON LAW CENTER CAREER DEVELOPMENT OFFICE (CDO) FIRST YEAR INITIATIVE

Career Development OfficeThe First Year Initiative serves to introduce students to the Career Development Office and legal employment searching, describe programs, and highlight important deadlines.

Each section has an assigned career counselor who will be with the students from that section throughout all three (or four) years of law school. The first step in conducting a job search is to meet with your career counselor. Get to know your counselor as they are the key to an extraordinary amount of career-related information and events. Schedule appointments by emailing your counselor or stopping by the office.

Judicial Internships

Judicial Internships offer the rare opportunity to work one-on-one with a judge.  While a few judges post positions, don't wait to see a posting to submit an application! Locate the federal and highest level Texas Appellate Court judges and their addresses on Symplicity. This is the same system the CDO uses for job postings, but it is also very helpful when applying for judicial internships and post-graduate judicial clerkships. The Texas State Court judges and their contact information will be available in folders in the Career Development Office.

Each first year student will be given a password to Symplicity after meeting with your individual career counselor.  After logging onto Symplicity, click on the clerkships tab at the top at the top of the page.  The next screen provides options for searching judges by court, judge’s last name, city, state, etc.  You can then use mail merge feature to address your cover letters and envelopes.  To access a starter letter for mail merge, click here.

If you are applying for state judicial internships, the clinical program website provides a useful contacts page for composing cover letters.

Keep in mind that most federal and appellate judges want to receive an application consisting of the following:

Individually tailored Cover Letter
Resume
Copy of Transcript
Writing Sample
