Co-Directors, Legal Research and Writing Program |
Legal Research and Writing
Legal Research and Writing
teaches the fundamentals of effective lawyering—good
research and writing skills. The program creates
a “lab” that complements core curricula,
reinforcing students’ abilities to synthesize
legal rules, teaching research methods to find them,
and instructing on written communication and analyses.
The Litigation
Skills Program
The Litigation Skills Program (Peter Hoffman, Director)
provides students with in-depth, practice-oriented
training on how lawyers litigate in the state and
federal courts, and instruction on the methods for
effective negotiation, settlement and alternative
dispute resolution techniques.
Clinical Legal
Education Program
Clinical Legal Education Program emphasizes hands-on
experience through clinic courses. Under the supervision
of licensed attorneys, students work directly with
clients—handling all aspects of case management,
including performing client interviews, preparing
motions and participating in court hearings and
trials. Students gain experience in various legal
disciplines, including criminal defense and prosecution,
family law and immigration law. |

Jim Lawrence, Director of Student Competitions |
Moot Court
The mission of the University of Houston Moot Court
Program is to provide an opportunity for law students
to integrate legal research, legal writing and substantive
theory into the art of oral advocacy. With competition
subject-matter ranging from bankruptcy to environmental
law to international arbitration, team members are
able to expand their legal knowledge base and increase
their legal reasoning skills.
Mock Trial
The University of Houston's Interscholastic Mock
Trial Team consists of approximately fifty students
who compete in a number of prestigious mock trial
competitions throughout the country. Benefits to
the students on the teams are numerous. First, participating
students attain a heightened understanding of the
rules of evidence, criminal and civil procedure.
In addition, students learn various areas of substantive
law as they prepare for trials based on those areas
of law. The practical experience of mock trial,
combined with the research necessary for tournament
preparation, provides team members with a diverse
base of legal knowledge.
