The Law Firm & Corporate Challenge

A Note from Tom Hetherington ’98, Law Firm & Corporate Challenge Chair

The University of Houston Law Center Law Firm & Corporate Challenge Program is a critical part of the Law Center’s pursuit of excellence.  In the history of the UH Law Center, we have never had this many firms and businesses with active Firm Captains.  This year’s results showed an increase in participation among the firms and businesses that employ many of our alumni, and has provided a strong foundation for the Program going forward.  We have simple but important goals for the Law Firm & Corporate Challenge Program:

-to increase the participation and involvement of our alumni;
-to provide resources to improve the quality of legal education at the Law Center; and
-to improve the Law Center’s relationship with the legal community.

We hope to build on this year’s success with even better results next year, and your participation is vital.  If you work at firm or business that is not currently participating, or if you would like to become more involved in the Program at your participating firm or business, please contact Alumni Affairs at (713) 743-2203.

Please let me know if I can do anything to help you increase alumni participation.

History & Mission

The Law Firm & Corporate Challenge program encourages alumni at participating Firms and Business to make annual contributions to the UH Law Fund.  Launched in the 07-08 fiscal year, the program was a huge success.  This year’s campaign has also been a great success with four law firms reaching 100% participation.  The Law Center thanks The Law Firm and Corporate Captains who provide valuable leadership and encouragement to their colleagues.

The Challenge:  Increase Annual Giving Participation Rates

The first challenge addressed by the Law Firm & Corporate Challenge is to increase the number of alumni who give to the Law Center each year.  By increasing the giving participation rate, the Law Center provides much needed discretionary resources for important initiatives in the absence of substantial endowment funds.

In addition to the monetary and participatory challenges that are addressed through the program, fostering an active, lasting connection between alumni, their businesses and the Law Center provides a mutually beneficial relationship – The Law Center corps of volunteers grows, and the law firms and corporations benefit from hiring truly great candidates from a top urban public law school.
