Tours of the UH Law Center

As a courtesy to our students during final exams, no tours will be offered to prospective applicants during the month of May. From June 1 through August 14, tours of the UH Law Center will be available on Mondays and Thursdays at 3 p.m., by appointment only. You may schedule a tour by calling 713.743.2280 or by sending an email to lawadmissions@uh.edu at least 24 hours in advance of the date you would like to visit the Law Center.

Class Visits

The Office of Admissions is happy to arrange a visit to a first year law school class during the fall and spring semesters. Class visits are by appointment only, and should be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance of the class you would like to attend. Visitors should plan to arrive at the Office of Admissions at least 10 minutes prior to the start of class, and must stay for the entire class period. Class visits may be scheduled by calling 713.743.2280, or by sending an email to lawadmissions@uh.edu.

Informational Sessions

The Office of Admissions hosts a number of Informational Sessions designed to give prospective applicants a general overview of the admissions process and the UH Law Center J.D. program. This is a great opportunity to have all of your questions answered. Tours of the Law Center will be available after each session. Reserve your space by calling 713.743.2280, or by email to lawadmissions@uh.edu.

Meeting with an Admissions Counselor

Admissions counselors are available to speak with prospective applicants by appointment Monday through Friday. Appointments are available for phone or in-person consultations. Here are some tips to make the most of your appointment with a counselor:

DO...

  • Review the Admissions website, particularly the Frequently Asked Questions and the admissions process information before your appointment.
  • Prepare questions before you come in. Counselors cannot anticipate all the questions that you may have, and you may have trouble remembering everything you wanted to ask. It is helpful when applicants arrive with a list of specific questions based on the information they have already gathered from our brochure and website, allowing them to guide the discussion.
  • Be on time. If you will be late, please call the Admissions Secretary. The Office of Admissions tries to accommodate late arrivals, but that is not always possible. If you let us know in advance that you will not be able to keep the original appointment, we can reschedule for another mutually-convenient time.

DON’T…

  • Fail to do your homework. Scheduling a meeting to ask about median LSAT scores, application deadlines, or other information easily found in our brochure or on the website is not a good use of your time. Use the resources available through our website, LSAC.org, and your pre-law advising office to help you determine what unanswered questions you still have before your meeting.

  • Ask the counselor to predict your chances for admission. The Admissions Committee considers many factors when making admissions decisions. Decisions are based on the overall strength of the application file, not solely on LSAT and GPA.

  • Expect personal statement or resume revisions. Admissions counselors are members of the Admissions Committee. Because they review and vote on applicant files, they are unable to assist you in drafting or editing your personal statement.

  • Assume that the meeting will be an interview. We do not offer interviews as part of our review process, and the counselor you meet with will be expecting to answer your questions, rather than asking you questions.

Re-applicant Counseling

If you have applied to the JD program and were not offered admission, we encourage you to speak with an admissions counselor before applying again in a subsequent year. Application files are archived for one year. If you come in for counseling within the year that your file is archived, an admissions counselor will review your previous application file with you, helping you to identify strengths and weaknesses in your application, and explain to you the application review process. Re-applicant counseling is intended to assist applicants in strengthening their applications. It is not required and should not be regarded as an interview or forum for requesting reconsideration. Re-applicant counseling is offered from June- October.

The UH Law Center is located on the UH Main Campus at Entrance 19.  Click here for directions. Please allow yourself plenty of time to find parking.  When you arrive, visit Entrance 1 to purchase a parking pass.
