SOME ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS FREQUENTLY
ASKED
BY FIRST YEAR FULL-TIME STUDENTS
Can a student change to the part-time division?
As a general rule, full-time students must complete
coursework as a full-time student through the first year. The earliest students
can take courses outside the first year curriculum is after the first year.
Can a student take a leave of absence?
Leaves of absence are granted for compelling reasons,
but whenever this occurs during the first year, it creates significant problems
because of sequencing for two-semester courses. For that reason, first year
students requesting a leave of absence after the fall semester may be granted
a leave only on the condition that the student take a leave for an entire year.
Students contemplating the need to have a mid first
year leave of absence for pregnancy, business, or other reasons are encouraged
to see Student Services as early as possible. In certain cases it may be advisable
to defer beginning law school for a year, rather than taking the leave of absence.
Who do students see about problems?
Students should see Student Services about most
concerns relating to scheduling, personal or health problems affecting law school,
and academic concerns. Students are also encouraged to discuss academic concerns
with course instructors. For problems related to other aspects of student services
(registration, grade errors, etc.), students should see the Associate Dean for
Student Affairs.
Can I defer my admission to law school?
Deferments are available on a case by case basis,
depending on the reason for the deferment, and the amount of time being requested
for the deferment. Petitions for deferment should be directed to the Assistant
Dean for Admissions. Deferments are not automatic and in many cases will not
be granted. In such cases it will be necessary to reapply to the Law Center.
How do I learn about announcements and other
information?
Students should make a habit of checking the BRIEFLY,
the student newsletter published weekly in the fall and spring semesters. Official
announcements and other important information is placed there. Students should
also check the Daily
Calendar frequently and the Events monitor located in the Commons.
MOST IMPORTANTLY - CHECK YOUR E-MAIL DAILY
