Many judges in state and federal judiciaries employ recent law school graduates as clerks to assist in their duties. Judicial clerkships are regarded as prestigious positions by the legal community because a clerkship offers the opportunity to develop a one-one-one relationship with a particular judge while gaining insight into the court system as a whole. Additionally, this experience provides for unlimited networking opportunities with practicing attorneys. Most clerkships are for one or two-year terms.
Judicial clerks are not limited to those who are interested in practicing trial law. For those who seek to practice other forms of law, the judicial clerkship serves as a maturing experience by providing insight into other aspects of the law. Judicial clerks are exposed to areas of law that they may not have been exposed to in law school. Thus, the opportunity provides an awareness of other legal fields.
For information on judicial clerkship positions, including application procedures, court information, helpful website links, sample resumes and cover letters, and a list of recent UH Law Center judicial clerks and reference materials, see the University of Houston Law Center Judicial Clerkship Handbook.
In order to provide 3L students with the most recent information on applying for judicial clerkships, including exchange of peer information on applications and interviews, the Career Development Office has created a Judicial Clerkship Board on Westlaw. To access the Judicial Clerkship Info Board, go to http://lawschool.westlaw.com/twen and enter your Westlaw ID. Please contact Rhonda Beassie in the Career Development Office (Suite 8 BLB) to obtain the passwords to enroll in the course.
